When one plants different kinds of plants together, one should make sure that they don’t grow too far into each other in gardens and landscapes. In traditional perennial garden culture, one digs the flowers or grasses up every three to ten years when they get too big or if the center of the plant dies out and resets them.

Layering : A very important concept of placing different kinds of plants together in a shrub border or mixed group is “layering.” Layering is placing tall plants in back, medium plants in the middle, and low plants in front of an area that has a backing, as a fence, wall, hedge, screen, forest, etc. If there is no backing and the area is out by itself, then place tall in the center, then surrounded by medium height height, then short plants on the outside.
